Bloomsburg University and Temple University Sign Pharmacy School Agreement
PHILADELPHIA, PA (09/14/2021) — Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania and the Temple University School of Pharmacy signed an agreement to guarantee admission for up to six qualified students per year to the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm. D.) program at Temple. The signing ceremony took place at the Temple University School of Pharmacy on North Broad Street in Philadelphia.
The agreement will allow students to earn both a Bloomsburg University undergraduate degree and a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Temple University in seven years, saving a full year of time and costs. The agreement, signed on Monday, Sept. 13, is effective immediately, allowing current Bloomsburg University students to apply for admission.
The Temple University program will admit those BU students majoring in chemistry or health sciences into the PharmD program at Temple following their junior year. BU students will then complete their final year enrolled in pharmacy coursework at the Temple University School of Pharmacy. That year will also serve to complete both their first year of study within the Doctor of Pharmacy program and concurrently to complete the final credits to receive their B.A. degree in chemistry or B.S. degree in health sciences from Bloomsburg University.
BU President Bashar W. Hanna, a three-time Temple University graduate, spoke of his pride in Temple and how this agreement will benefit BU students.
"I still bleed cherry and white," joked Hanna. "But more importantly, I am beyond grateful for this wonderful partnership which benefits our students, nearly a third of whom are first-generation students."
BU Dean of the College of Science and Technology, Latha Ramakrishnan, said the partnership fits well with mission of the school.
"Our mission is access and student success," said Ramakrishnan. "We are now providing a pathway for students from Northeastern and Central Pennsylvania to achieve both a PharmD degree from Temple as well as financial savings."
Temple University interim provost, Gregory Mandel, spoke of how important this signing is to students.
"This partnership will help students reach their fullest potential," he said. "We're honored to take this notable step into the future with Bloomsburg."
"We are excited about the partnership between our two universities," said Diana Rogers-Adkinson, Bloomsburg University provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs. "The Temple University School of Pharmacy has been preparing pharmacists for more than 100 years and it is wonderful that our students will be able to take advantage of all that the school has to offer."
Signing the agreement were BU Dean Ramakrishnan and Temple University Pharmacy Dean Jayanth Panyam.
